About Joshua Redman

The son of famed American tenor saxophone player Dewey Redman, sax-player Joshua Redman won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 1991. He has recorded with notable jazz artists like Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Branford Marsalis, Charlie Haden, Christian McBride, Brad Mehldau and Brian Blade among others, and has received Grammy-nominations. In many ways Redman is a modern hybrid of Sonny Rollins and Michael Brecker in that his live shows explode with his "restless musical energy". His horizons are broad, making him a saxophonist of the people, while also maintaining his position as a darling of the critics. This is perhaps because his playing practically bubbles over with energy, warmth and humor – all the while inviting the listener to the party. Redman: “Jazz is a music of surprise; it's a music of spontaneity. I think jazz musicians live - I know I do - for being surprised and not knowing what's going to come next.”
