She’s from New York, he’s from Mumbai. Rated one of Vh1’s Top Ten emerging artists out of India, the diasporic duo’s brand of electronic “lovebeat” has rocked over 60 shows in New York, the UK and India. India’s answer to the electronica/ dance scene, S+F’s sound is distinctive: bass-heavy rhythms, poetic lyrics, and haunting synth melodies. Their live shows are always high on energy, performance and costuming, and always tons of fun.
SHAA’IR + FUNC are DIY artists from Mumbai and NYC. Together they produce and compose music. They have released an album entitled ‘NEW DAY – The Love Album’ out on Counterculture Records (MUMBAI, India), in MAY 2007 They were placed at no. 9 as VH1’s top ten big rookies in 2007 in India. Currently they are in India putting final touches on their second album and touring. They have spent most of 2007 performing and recording all over India, NYC and London. SHAAIR means poet, in Urdu. FUNC comes from the word function, and also rhymes with funk. SHAA’IR is from NYC and comes from a performance art background, having danced and performed on and off Broadway. She is also a graduate of NYU’s prestigious music performance program. FUNC is an art school graduate from Mumbai, India and has been part rock band Pentagram for 14 yrs. He is also a producer who has worked and collaborated with several bands, and also composes for tv and films.
They met in India in 2005. Decided to write music together. And are on a mission to bridge and unite the world of music and art with their sound. SHAA’IR grew up in the U.S.A in Maryland, listening to Indian classical, ghazals and bollywood music. FUNC grew up in Mumbai listening to funk, rock, disco and reggae from the west. It is this wonderful evolution that makes their sound what it is and drives them to share an idea that it is ‘the world is not always what it seems like on TV’ STOP THE PROPOGANDA.
